"You may be surprised to hear he's a congressional candidate for Texas and not a hit-man in a porno movie".

Crenshaw was quick to respond to Davidson's skit on Sunday morning.

After outrage on social media, Crenshaw addressed the controversy in a tweet on Sunday, saying that he tries "not to offend" and tries harder "not to be offended".

"But I would like him and "Saturday Night Live" to recognize something, which is that veterans across the country probably don't feel as though their wounds they received in battle should be the subject of a bad punchline for a bad joke", Crenshaw said.

The National Republican Congressional Committee also released a statement condemning Davidson's actions and calling for an apology from NBC.

"NBC should immediately apologize to Dan, and to the millions of veterans and military families who tune in every weekend - because they're not laughing", Pandol added.

While campaigning in July 2015, Donald Trump said McCain wasn't a "war hero because he was captured".

"One of our Afghan interpreters stepped on a pressure plate right in front of me", he said.

"On Dan's third deployment in 2012, his life changed forever".

Doctors said he'd never see again, but Crenshaw regained sight in his left eye after undergoing several surgeries and receiving specialized contact lenses.

It is certainly not news that Saturday Night Live likes to poke fun of politicians, especially on the Republican side of the aisle.

Davidson noted that there are "some gross people" running and dissed candidates such as Gov. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), among others.

Crenshaw is running to represent the heavily-Republican second district of Texas, and is widely expected to win against his general election opponent, Democrat Todd Litton.
