Starting with Chrome 71, which is expected to roll out to stable in December, Google will block all ads it deems "abusive" in nature.

In a blog post, Google said it had tried to protect users against ads that were "designed to intentionally mislead and trick users", but the protections weren't good enough. Unfortunately, they found that more than half of current abusive ad experiences aren't blocked by these protections.

Google defines abusive experience as fake messages, phishing, auto-redirect without user action, and unexpected click areas. Before ads are removed, site owners will be notified in Google Search Console if there are abusive ad experiences on their site.

Following its own internal investigations into abusive web practices, Google claims to have identified the tactics used.

This new policy is only the next step in Google attempting to control abusive experience online. These measures have been insufficient to prevent misleading or unsafe ads, hence Google taking further steps to banish them from the Web. Now, Google is pushing things even farther by blocking all ad content in general on sites which have a persistent history of abuse. The updated Chrome browser 71 will enable this feature by default although users will also have the option to manually turn it off. Barring that, the new version of Chrome will simply block every single one of the ads on your site. "Abusive experiences" was basically in reference to all of the super obnoxious ads across the web that open new tabs or windows and redirect you to pages you don't want to go.

Google says that there are only a small number of these sites in existence. You click on the "close" button but it's not actually a close button - it's just another link. Google has confirmed that it will begin blocking all ads on sites that list abusive ads from December this year.

Chrome is already making efforts to increase user experience and security against unwanted website behaviors.

As such experiences were becoming a commonplace with 1 in 5 feedback reports apparently mentioning some form of user-hostile content.
