  • Bruce Irvin says Patriots offered more money but he chose Falcons

Trading Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper certainly doesn't help, with the latest casualty being leading sack getter Bruce Irvin, who found himself waived by the Raiders this past weekend. He'll spend one year on the Falcons (4-4), who are third in the AFC South behind the Carolina Panthers (6-2) and the New Orleans Saints (7-1). While he had a checkered past involving run-ins with the law, which he detailed in a first-person account for The Players' Tribune, Irvin was ready to move back to Georgia's capital once the opportunity presented itself. He signed a one-year deal with the Falcons on Wednesday, and while financial terms were not released, he is still owed $3.8 million from Oakland for the remainder of the season. The 31-year-old has played in eight games this year and has totaled six tackles and three sacks.

"We're a 4-3 team now, so in the base defense sometimes he doesn't fit the role we need done", he said.

The Falcons have talent along the defensive line, and it will be interesting to see how they plug Irvin into the mix. Quinn knows how to use Irvin, putting him in the best positions to succeed and improve an Atlanta pass rush with some questions.

Irvin played his sophomore and third-year in the National Football League with Quinn as his defensive coordinator.

Maximizing his chances to win a second ring wasn't the primary motivation for Irvin this week.

Signing Bruce Irvin improves Atlanta's ever-increasing playoff hopes helping fix the weakness of their team.
