NBC says it will stop airing Trump immigrant ad

  • US President Donald Trump has been campaigning across the country

Fox News, NBC and Facebook have pulled a Trump campaign ad branded racist, which equates a convicted Mexican murderer with Central American migrants en route to the USA border.

The fearmongering ad is both factually misleading - Bracamontes entered the country under Democratic and Republican administrations - and offensive, painting a group of thousands of Central American migrants, who are fleeing poverty and violence in their home countries, as unsafe criminals without evidence.

Facebook Inc also said it would no longer allow paid promotions of the ad, although it would allow users to share it on their own pages.

CNN refused to broadcast the ad from the beginning.

Actress Debra Messing has said that she's "ashamed" that NBC ran an ad by the Trump campaign deemed too racist by CNN. "When presented with an opportunity to be paid to take a version of this ad, we declined", CNN tweeted back at Trump Jr.

After NBC announced its decision, Trump's most fervent supports lost it. Trump's 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale, declared that NBC chose to side with illegal immigrants over us citizens by exercising editorial judgment.

"Sunday Night Football" is one of NBC's preeminent properties, and the Packers-Patriots game was the most-watched primetime show on any channel since March.

Fox News Channel, which Trump has repeatedly named his favourite broadcaster and is highly supportive of his increasingly nationalist policies, also said it would no longer run the spot.

On Facebook's platform, the ad reached millions of viewers before the social network made a decision to stop running it Monday.

Although Fox will not show the ad going forward, the network did air the ad over the weekend before deciding to pull the plug on Monday.

When he was asked if he thought the ad was offensive, he responded, "A lot of things are offensive". As for Facebook, where the campaign had deployed the video as a targeted advertisement, they explained it had violated the company's policy "against sensational content".

As part of his scorched-earth strategy in the final days before Tuesday's momentous midterm elections, Trump's 2020 reelection campaign released two ads widely viewed as racist attacks on immigrants.

The ad paints a doomsday scenario in which an "invasion" of few thousand Central America asylum seekers - many of them women and children traveling in a series of caravans - supposedly posed a dire threat to American democracy.

Mr Parscale said the media was trying to control what Americans see and think.

The caravan video was blocked only from being turned into an ad on Facebook - not blocked entirely.

Fox News said it had made the decision after a review but did not elaborate.
