  • NASA's Parker Solar Probe Sets Record for Closest Approach to Sun

The impressive mission in getting so close to the sun is on its way, and the Parker Solar Probe has already broken some of the records.

In a period of only 78 days of the launch of Parker Solar Probe, the spacecraft has made history by cruising closest to the Sun.

The probe surpassed the previous record of 26.55 million miles from the star's surface on Monday October 29 at around 1:04 pm ET. The previous record was set by Helios 2 Spacecraft in April 1976.

NASA expects to get the first batch of data in December, but the spacecraft has another mission: it holds a memory card with the names of over 1.1 million people who signed up to "travel" to the Sun. After that, the probe will burn up in the sunlight.

These records will fall again and again over the course of the Parker Solar Probe's $1.5 billion mission, which began August 12 with a liftoff from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

That record was likewise set by the Helios 2 back in 1976, and it now stands at 153,454MPH. Currently, the Parker mission Solar Probe continues, and the device will continue to approach the Sun. To move closer to the sun, a spacecraft has to lose some of this energy.

"It's a bit like if you walked away from a campfire and suddenly got much hotter", Fox said.

At the same time, the probe has to withstand vast temperatures of up to 1,377 Celsius (2,500 Fahrenheit).

While Parker is in orbit around the Sun seven years, if the earlier does not fail.

And NASA's Parker Solar Probe, travelling at more than 240,000km/h, isn't yet done with setting new records. By the time of its 22nd perihelion on 24 December 2024, it will be moving at a projected speed of around 200 km/s only 6.2 million km (3.8 million mi) from the surface. The spacecraft uses a special carbon-composite shield for protection from intense heat and radiation during close flybys.

The primary goal of the Parker Solar Probe is to study the solar wind.
