It will be the first launch of an astronaut carrying capable capsule from American soil since the retirement of the space shuttles in 2011.

Both companies acclaimed that safety is the first priority for them.

Mr. Musk, who is also at the helm of electric-car maker Tesla, Inc.as CEO, has been under the spotlight throughout the year for bad reasons, including calling a British diver who led the Thailand cave rescue mission a 'pedo guy', and his August 7 tweets saying he was 'considering taking Tesla private at $420'.

The order prompted by the recent behavior of SpaceX's founder, Elon Musk after he took a hit of marijuana and sipped whiskey on a podcast streamed on the Internet. The Washington Post reports that NASA officials were upset that Musk had violated drug policies and ordered the probe to examine company culture.

In 2014, SpaceX and Boeing were awarded contracts to work with NASA and build separate capsules to launch astronauts to the space station.

SpaceX and Boeing now have a contract with NASA to fly astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS) starting next year. "As always, NASA will ensure they do so", a NASA spokesperson said.

The review into the "safety culture" of both Boeing and SpaceX will begin next year, NASA associate administrator for human exploration, William Gerstenmaier, said, TechCrunch reported. The first crewed test flight of the capsule, known as Demo-2, is now targeted for June 2019; an in-flight "abort test" that proves out Crew Dragon's emergency-escape systems will take place between the two demonstration missions, NASA officials said in today's update.

Boeing has encountered propulsion problems in the Starliner's abort system and is behind schedule on key tests while SpaceX faces "serious difficulties", according to the NASA Aerospace Advisory Panel, including concerns about high-pressure helium tanks used in the Falcon 9 booster and parachute issues with the Crew Dragon.

Boeing said it's committed to continuing a legacy of trust, openness and mission success with NASA.

SpaceX is planning to a launch its spacecraft without crew in January and plans to fly with astronauts on board by June 2019. SpaceX's contract is worth approximately $2.6 billion, while Boeing's is worth up to $4.2 billion.
