  • Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are set to become the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress

Rashida Tlaib will be the nation's first Muslim woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

As an 8-year-old, Omar and her family fled Somalia, first living in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years before coming to the United States and moving to Cedar-Riverside in 1997. "We changed the course of history at a time we thought it was impossible". They were also vocal in their support for each another, with Tlaib writing to Omar on Twitter in August that: "I can't wait to walk onto the floor of United States Congress hand in hand with you".

She added: "I think people don't realise just how much of a roller-coaster it is and its happy chaos right now".

Omar will succeed US Rep. Keith Ellison, who gave up the safe seat in a heavily Democratic Minneapolis-area district to run for state attorney general.

Tlaib celebrated her congressional victory not with an American flag, but with a Palestinian flag. The other, Democrat Rashida Tlaib, easily won a race for Michigan's 13th District on Tuesday in which she did not have a Republican challenger.

Tuesday's elections made history, with an unprecedented number of minorities and women running for office.

MA will also be getting its first black congresswoman while Arizona and Tennessee stand to elect their first woman senators.

Tlaib, 42, was born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrant parents.

America's first openly gay Governor, Jared Polis was elected to take the helms of Colorado, while Sharice Davids, became both the first Native American congresswoman and the first lesbian congresswoman from Kansas.

Her campaign platform included pledges to secure a $15 minimum wage, preventing cuts to welfare programmes, such as Medicare and Social Security, as well as stopping tax relief to large corporations.

Also in the Senate, Republican Marsha Blackburn will become Tennessee's first woman senator.
