British researchers analyzed two data banks that included more than 409,000 women to investigate the link between sleep traits and breast cancer risk.

In a final note to wrap up the series of activities, Hospital Manager, Mrs. Wilhelmina Banful said Medifem embarked on the activities as part of efforts to raise awareness on breast cancer which is killing many people especially women in Ghana and urged the general public to go for regular screening.

Dr Richmond said further research is required to "investigate the mechanism underlying the effects of different sleep characteristics on the risk of developing breast cancer".

It said in a statement that the breast cancer awareness week was observed around the world in the month of October, as an annual global campaign organised by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

"These intriguing results add to the growing body of evidence that there is some overlap between the genetics of when we'd prefer to sleep and our breast cancer risk, but more research is required to unravel the specifics of this relationship", he said.

The research involving more than 400,000 women found "larks" have a breast cancer risk up to 48 per cent lower than "night owls".

That's according to European researchers looking at International Genetic Data. Using genetic variants reduces the effect of confounding or reverse causation, making the technique more reliable than other observational methods.

There is good news if you are a morning person.

Because these bits of DNA are set at birth and are not linked to other known causes of cancer, like obesity, it means the researchers are reasonably confident body clocks are involved in cancer.

"We know that sleep is important generally for health", said Richmond. This study provides further evidence to suggest disrupted sleep patterns may have a role in cancer development.

In 2018, it is estimated that 627,000 women passed away from breast cancer, that is approximately 15% of all cancer deaths among women. "This helps to avoid misleading conclusions that could have been affected by confounding factors".

The study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council. Its 19 member organisations work together to accelerate progress in cancer-related research through collaboration, to improve health and quality of life.

Careem, one of the region's leading technology organisations, launched a breast cancer awareness campaign in partnership with the Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) last October.
