  • Authorities responded to a report of an active shooter at a Thousand Oaks nightclub

Ventura County Fire Department said on its website that firefighters and first responders were at the scene of a reported shooting in Ventura County in California.

The authorities were alerted to the incident at around 11.20pm local time.

A sheriff's captain says eleven people were shot late Wednesday when a suspect opened fire in a crowded Southern California bar.

Around 30 shots were fired, officers at the scene claim. "These poeple have never hurt anyone in their lives, they are just kids", he said.

He said the man set off smoke grenades inside before opening fire.

A trail of blood was visible on the street at the entrance of the venue.

There were reports of more gunfire as officers responded.

He said he heard from people inside that they were hiding in bathrooms and the attic of the bar.

Video showed causalities being carried out of the bar by members of the public and emergency workers.

'He threw in smoke bombs and he kept firing.

Further information on the extent of the victims' injuries has not been released. An event aimed at university students was scheduled to take place this evening.

The bar is located about 40 miles west of Los Angeles and describes itself as a western-style bar with a spacious dance floor used for theme nights such as country, salsa and swing.

Authorities are still treating it as an active shooter scene.
