The fire placed 75,000 homes in Los Angeles and Ventura counties under evacuation orders Friday morning and was zero percent contained after scorching 8,000 acres, destroying multiple structures and threatening at least 30,000 homes in the two counties, authorities said.

As of Thursday evening, it was burning above Cal State University Channel Islands, in the footprint of the 2013 Springs Fire which burned 24,000 acres.

No injuries have been reported in either fire.

"Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home".

Firefighters had their hands full, as another blaze to the north, the Hill Fire, prompted mandatory evacuations in Newbury Park and a closure of the 101 Freeway from Borchard Rd.to Pleasant Valley Rd.

"We grabbed our animals and some food and some clothes and we're getting the heck out of here", one man said.

On Thursday, as flames engulfed Paradise, frantic residents racing to safety plunged into the thick smoke that darkened the daytime sky and made driving hard.

Intense winds and low humidity are feeding the flames.

"This fire moved so fast and grew so fast a lot of people got caught by it".

No estimate was given on the number of structures destroyed but the Fire Department did say there were "many". "The town center is completely on the ground". "It was just a wall of fire on each side of us, and we could hardly see the road in front of us".

Whitney Vaughan described a scene of panic and terror as she recalled her narrow escape from her Paradise home on Thursday morning. "I don't know. When I left it was all on fire". Early Friday morning, CalFire said it had burned 10,000 acres, or about 15 square miles.

Winds were blowing between 25-30 miles per hour and pushed the fire across the freeway onto Conejo Mountain toward the Pacific Coast Highway.

Rescuers used a bulldozer to push abandoned cars out of the way in order to reach a hospital and evacuate patients as the fire engulfed the building, Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter said.

The blaze comes in the wake of the Thousand Oaks shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night that killed 13 people, including the gunman.

Evacuation centers are open Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

About 12:30 a.m. Friday, all residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties north of the Ventura (101) Freeway, south of Bell Canyon Road, west of Valley Circle Boulevard and east of Erbes Road, as well as north of Kanan Road, west of Lindero Canyon to Erbes Road extending north to Sunset Hills Boulevard, were told to evacuate, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
