Manchester City hit by more allegations over Uefa’s financial fair play rules

  • It will be interesting to see how Manchester City respond to the said email leaks

In August Man City celebrated the 10th anniversary since Sheikh Mansour, a member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family, took control of the club, pouring billions into player budgets and infrastructure to turn the perennial Premier League strugglers into champions.

"Always I've said we can not achieve what we achieve, like the big clubs in Europe, is because they have to spend".

Manchester City created a shell company for a commercial deal to disguise tens of millions of dollars in income from UEFA investigators, according to club documents cited by a German magazine.

Der Spiegel claims one of City's solutions to circumvent the rules was to launch Project Longbow. Critics say FFP protects storied clubs from ambitious rivals with new and wealthy owners.

In a further email explaining the project's name, City's chief legal adviser Simon Cliff noted the longbow was the "weapon the English used to beat the French at Crecy and Agincourt".

And Guardiola defended the professionalism of the club at all levels behind the scenes.

He went on to accuse City - and Paris Saint-Germain - of cheating. In one case, documents from City's chief financial officer, Jorge Chumillas, appear to show the Abu Dhabi United Group, Mansour's holding company which also owns City, directly paid £59.5m of Etihad's annual sponsorship, with only £8m coming from the airline.

Man City apparently wanted to shift some costs away from the club and helped set up a shell company called Fordham Sports Management with two British investors.

City released a statement following the initial allegations that were made on Friday.

La Liga president Javier Tebas made a similar claim previous year, with European football's governing body Uefa responding by saying it was not investigating City, who have won the Premier League three times since Sheikh Mansour took over in 2008.

City have not commented on the stream of claims beyond referring to a statement they issued last week which read: "We will not be providing any comment on out of context materials purportedly hacked or stolen from City Football Group and Manchester City personnel and associated people". Of course we want to follow the rules, from UEFA and Federation Internationale de Football Association and the Premier League.

When asked about the accusations, the manager Pep Guardiola insisted that City had always tried to do things the right way. "We work a lot in a good way and that's why I always defend us - especially my players - what we do". "We want to follow the rules, but I'm a manager, I don't know what happened", he added. "Incredible people working here, and how professional they are in all the departments", he said.
