Zimbabwe's controversial Prophet Walter Magaya on Thursday retracted claims that he had found a cure for HIV amid intense political pressure.

He said the cure was an herb called Aguma, which has the capacity would destroy the HIV virus in just 14 days.

Magaya announced to his congregants last Sunday that he spent two-years praying to God to lead him to the source of the cure. He will be back in court on November 29.

"The website was visited, and it was discovered that Magaya claimed that they had conducted some clinical trials and proved that the Aguma medicine can cure HIV and AIDS", read the request for remand forms.

He further made claims on Aretha medical website (www.arethamedical.com) and that Aretha medical and himself were the manufacturers of the Aguma medicine which he claimed can cure above mentioned diseases.

On October 31, police obtained a warrant of search and seizure at the Harare Magistrates' Court and raided Magaya's church premises and allegedly recovered unregistered prescription preparatory medicines, drug manufacturing, packaging machines and drug manufacturing raw materials and 20 bags containing empty capsules, plastic containers and plastic container lids.

Also, Zimbabwe's Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa said Government was concerned with these claims as there were processes and procedures in Zimbabwe that medicines go through before they are recognised as effective and safe for use by patients. Having carried the research outside the country (in India), I went on to announce the results unprocedurally.

As of the end of 2017, 87 per cent of Zimbabweans living with HIV were aware of their status, and 74 per cent of them were receiving treatment, UNAIDS report stated.

In a statement, World Health Organization representative to Zimbabwe Alex Gasasira said to date, there is no known and proven cure for HIV infection, but effective treatment exists to manage the infection through antiretroviral therapy and drugs.

His claims were dismissed by the World Health Organisation, the United Nations and medical bodies in the country. The country has been making strides in its fight against HIV/Aids despite the current economic turmoil which health experts say has hit the operations of most of the country's major hospitals, including the procurement of essential drugs for people living with the pandemic.
