"When we opened the black box, yes indeed the technical problem was the airspeed or the speed of the plane", head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee Soerjanto Tjahjono said, according to The Guardian.

Hundreds of relatives of victims have prayed and thrown flowers into the Java Sea where a Lion Air jet plunged into the water more than a week ago, killing all 189 people on board.

The body asked the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board "and Boeing to take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents, especially on the Boeing 737 Max, which number 200 aircraft all over the world", it said in the statement.

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Indonesian authorities on Sunday extended by three days the search for victims and a second black box recorder from wreckage of the almost new Boeing 737 MAX that slammed into the sea a week ago only minutes after it took off from Jakarta. He maintained that the agency is now studying it based on the pieces of evidence they managed to recover so far that includes the plane's flight data recorder (FDR).

The initial readings from the data recorder showing an airspeed malfunction offer the first solid explanation for why the flight appeared to vary its speeds and altitude starting shortly after takeoff.

Passengers who were on the plane's last flight before it crashed said the plane was climbing and dropping so wildly that people onboard were panicking, and some vomited.

Indonesia's transport ministry has scheduled a briefing at 12.30pm in Jakarta on Wednesday to share updated information on the Lion Air accident. Lion Air said Monday that almost 70 ships have been deployed in the search, with more than 1,000 people involved.

Meanwhile, the search operation to recover the passengers, crew and the airplane's cockpit voice recorder is ongoing. "But we can't find the CVR yet", Muhammad Syaugi said.

Black box data recovered from the crashed Lion Air jet showed the plane had an airspeed indicator problem on its four flights.

Lion Air flight JT610 plummeted into the Java Sea just 13 minutes after taking off from the country's capital Jakarta last Monday.

The plane was only a few months old and had logged a total of 19 flights and 800 flying hours.

Founder and owner of Lion Air Rusdi Kirana bows in front of relatives of the victims in the crashed Lion Air jet during a press conference in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 5, 2018.

Pilots had reported a problem with one of the plane's instruments on a flight the day before the crash.

"After 10 minutes in the air the plane dropped as if it was losing power".

Lion Air is one of the youngest airlines in Indonesia but has rapidly grown, expanding its flights in Southeast Asia.

"The plane was intact when it plunged to the sea, it did not explode in the air, and the aircraft engine was running when it touched the water at high RPM - it's marked by the loss of all blades of the turbine", KNKT agency head Tjahjono said.
