  • Mike Tomlin Takes Shot at Le'Veon Bell: 'We Need Volunteers, Not Hostages'

If Bell wants to play football in 2018, he has to report to the team by November 13, and with just over one week to go until that deadline, Bell sent out a cryptic tweet on Monday that may or may not indicate that he's now headed for Pittsburgh.

OK, let's get back to Bell. Right now, that's unclear.

But with James Conner rolling as he now is, the feeling in the locker room is far less interested in how the situation is resolved than it was back when the season was starting and Bell failed to report before the team's regular season opener at Cleveland. "So we just put our best foot forward and try to do the best for this team".

Head coach Mike Tomlin could just hand Bell the keys and make him the feature back for the rest of the season.

By collective bargaining agreement, Bell is allowed to skip the first nine weeks of the season, show up for week 10 and still count that as a full year of service, which leaves $8.5 million on the table.

"We haven't spent a lot of time focused on it because it's not within our control. Those decisions are Le'Veon's", Tomlin said, via ESPN.com. "We need volunteers, not hostages". He would have made more than double what anybody on the offensive line would have made which includes All-Pro David Decastro whose cap number is roughly 5.7 million. "Do you think I'm going to worry about a guy who's not here?" A return to Pittsburgh would be a positive step. In his absence, Conner has been putting up huge numbers.

Having said that, if Bell is ready to roll against the Chargers what would be the best course of action for all involved?

The awkward part for Bell is that no one seems to be happy about his potential return.

But nonetheless, his skills on the field would be a huge help to this Steelers team looking to get back to the playoffs, so fans would probably get over it pretty quickly if he played well.
