On Thursday, US State Department deputy spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters that Khashoggi's remains should be located and returned to his family for a burial as soon as possible. After offer varying explanations for his disappearance, Saudi Arabia acknowledged he was killed in the diplomatic facility, but sought to shift the blame for his slaying on a "rogue operation".

Here, a protester holds a placard showing solidarity for Khashoggi during a demonstration outside the Saudi Arabian Embassy in London last week.

Among the suspects are 15 members of an alleged "hit squad" that Turkey claims was sent to Istanbul to kill The Washington Post columnist who had written critically of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

According to a new report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, the Saudi-led war has so far claimed the lives of around 56,000 Yemenis.

His body has not been found and an aide to President Erdogan, Yasin Aktay, has said he believes it was dissolved in acid after being cut up.

Khashoggi vanished after entering the consulate on October 2 to obtain paperwork for his marriage to his Turkish fiancee Hatice Cengiz.

Saudi Arabia faces sharp criticism from the global community in the wake of the death.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the order for Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's killing came from the highest level of the Saudi government.

The Washington Post, for which Khashoggi was a contributor, also reported the use of acid or a chemical agent to dissolve the writer's remains.

Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, has written in the Washington Post, calling on the worldwide community to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The call from Mohammed bin Salman took place before Saudi Arabia acknowledged that the writer was murdered and urged Kushner, President's Trump's son-in-law and a White House adviser, and Bolton to maintain the alliance between the USA and Saudi Arabia, the Washington Post reported.

Hours before the memorial, Cengiz wrote about Khashoggi in an opinion piece for The Washington Post, saying, "As we witness the worldwide outrage at his killing, the perpetrators should know that they can never erase his vision for his beloved country".

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating military campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the aim of bringing the government of former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing the country's popular Houthi Ansarullah movement.

A Thursday report in The Washington Post said Netanyahu told Trump administration officials that bin Salman was a key strategic partner and a linchpin of the alliance against Iranian encroachment in the region.

We have to ensure stability [in Saudi Arabia].
