  • Ruth Coppinger said women were getting weary at 'routine victim-blaming in Irish courts'

Other women in Ireland have joined in the protest by posting pictures of their own underwear on the internet, and several rallies are being held around the country.

Women are sharing photos of their underwear on Twitter along with the hashtag #ThisIsNotConsent after an Irish teenager's thong was cited in the trial of the man accused of raping her.

"You have to look at the way she was dressed", she added.

"Does the evidence out-rule the possibility that she was attracted to the defendant and was open to meeting someone and being with someone?" she asked, according to the Examiner's report.

A 27-year-old man, who denied raping a 17-year-old in Ireland, was acquitted in court last week and it sparked a viral social media movement with the hashtag "This is not consent".

"It might seem embarrassing to show a pair of thongs here. how do you think a rape victim or a woman feels at the incongruous setting of her underwear being shown in a court", she asked fellow parliamentarians.

Nearly 400 people rallied in Cork on Wednesday against the verdict, the Irish Independent reported, while the social media campaign #ThisisNotConsent gained traction globally.

"The women of this country are getting a little tired at the routine victim-blaming that is going in Irish courts, and the failure of lawmakers in this House do anything about it", she added, the Irish Independent reported Wednesday.

One week after a lawyer urged a court to focus on the type of underwear a teen girl was wearing the night she alleges a man sexually assaulted her, Irish women are taking to the streets to protest.

The accused told his senior counsel that what happened was consensual.

"We've seen recently clothes, fake tan, even contraception being used to discredit women who have the bravery to go to court", she said.

Earlier this year, Dillon set up the "I Believe Her - Ireland" Twitter page with the aim of providing an anonymous and safe space for survivors of sexual violence to share their stories and to get support.

In Dublin, protesters marched towards the Spire and hung underwear on a "washing line".

More Irish women, including Ms Coppinger, followed suit, and underwear were also displayed during protests in Cork and Dublin on Wednesday.
