  • Former Argentina hooker and current Pumas head coach Mario Ledesma battles Ireland in a maul during the 2007 World Cup game

The Tullow Tank makes his return to global action for the first time in a year this evening when Ireland host Argentina in the Aviva Stadium.

Ireland were fortunate to edge an error-strewn first 40 minutes and trailed early in the second period before finding some much-needed composure to pull away from the risky Pumas. They made good progress up the pitch until Jordan Larmour found himself isolated which allowed Javier Ortega Desio to latch onto the ball and win a penalty for his side.

"And I think that's the next step not just for Ireland but for the provinces, to start to bring through Irish coaches and not have an over-reliance on foreign coaches".

"There's lots to work on".

"No matter what Joe does, he has changed Irish rugby and how we perceive performance and preparation".

They did well to stay in the contest with flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez kicking four penalties to help make it a one-point game in the final quarter. Sexton's conversion made it 25-17 and breathing room with 15 minutes to go.

After Sanchez accepted another penalty shot from distance, Sexton nudged the hosts into a scarcely deserved lead.

However, replacement scrumhalf Luke McGrath used a dominant scrum to his advantage to score what proved to be the decisive try that saved Ireland from potentially slipping to their first defeat of the year.

"He was already coaching, he was already contributing", said Schmidt.

Wales, who will meet Australia in their pool in Japan, ended a 13-game losing streak against the southern hemisphere team in an error-strewn arm-wrestle.

O'Brien has tended to rise to challenges of this kind in the past and he is a player that Schmidt has real faith in. (Flanker) Ellis Jenkins was outstanding. Cian Healy and Tadhg Furlong are also in the front row.

Dan Leavy will look to keep the pressure on O'Brien.

"We always said if a conversation was needed to the contrary we'd have it".

"The boys dug deep".

"Not being in Australia, we didn't get that opportunity".

"I don't think it really spills over into the narrative", he said. "The pleasing aspect was that it didn't affect his game and he came out in the second half and performed really well".

"But Conor has that incredible capacity to exit us well, give us the free-flow and whip out a pass that makes him a world-class player".

"I would be delighted if we are as competitive as we were the last three times". We probably wouldn't have won today had it been first up.

"He's a tough dude to play against and he's got a good rugby nous". Seven wins in a row. "This could possibly be your last chance" because coming into a World Cup year, if he's not going to perform over the next few weeks, there's plenty of guys there that are playing superb rugby".

Next up for Wales is a meeting with Tonga.

Schmidt guided Ireland to two Six Nations titles before going one better with the Grand Slam this year - only the third in their history in either the Five or Six Nations championship - after winning two European Cups and a Pro14 trophy with Leinster.
