Indonesian flight delayed due to stinky fruit

  • Stinky fruit causes plane protest

In April, the smell of durian rotting in a cupboard at an Australian university's library was mistaken for a gas leak, the Associated Press reported.

For those not in the know about the fruit's smell, food writer Richard Sterling once wrote, "its odor is best described as...turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock".

According to the BBC, about two tons of the fruit was in the plane's cargo hold.

He said he talked to an "officer" on the flight who told him that the plane was going to take off anyway.

It's even banned from public transport in Singapore and Bangkok, where it's also not uncommon to see "No Durian Allowed" signs in hotels and hostels.

A number of online commenters lauded the passengers' refusal to fly with such a large amount of durian on board, pointing to safety concerns in the wake of last week's Lion Air crash that killed 189 passengers and cabin crew.

The standoff ended when boarded passengers began to get off the flight.

At one point, things got so heated that a brawl nearly ensued, according to Boyke Ledy Watra, a journalist with Indonesian news agency Antara who was among those on board.

Realising he wasn't the only one unhappy, Amir Zidane rallied support, writing in his post: "I yelled at the other passengers 'Who on this plane wants to fly?'". It caused the plane to depart with a one hour delay.

The flight eventually took off around 11:40am local time (04:40 GMT), an hour later than scheduled. "Many airlines do this", Retri Maya, senior corporate communications manager for Sriwijaya Airlines told the Jakarta post in a press statement.

Eventually, they were all asked to leave the plane while the crew unloaded the durian.

The company then went on to say that it was normal practice for Indonesian airlines to carry durian in the hold, "as long as [the durian] is packed well and enclosed in the cargo according to standard operating procedure".
