Democrats have tried to turn the investigation around on Kemp, accusing him of suppressing thousands of minority votes.

Those tensions exploded in the home stretch after a private citizen raised concerns that the voter database Kemp is responsible for as secretary of state is hackable, meaning a bad actor could potentially alter or delete a voter's information in the files used to check-in voters at polling places.

The "exact match" system simply says that new registrations must match the name of the applicant exactly.

Former President Obama recently joined Abrams on the campaign trail, suggesting that Kemp has "already been caught" guilty of voter suppression.

Abrams, who could become the first African-American woman governor in history, in an interview with the CNN, slammed the accusation made against her party, calling Kemp's actions a "desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people".

Kemp briefly addressed attendees to laud President Trump for "having Georgia on your mind".

She's accused Kemp of using his post as secretary of state to make it harder for certain voters to cast ballots.

Kemp's office said in a statement on Sunday it launched the investigation late on Saturday and that it had notified the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI.

Days before elections, Georgia's Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who is running a close-fought campaign for governor, says Democrats are under investigation for hacking the state's election system.

"In fact, I think he cooked up the charge because he realizes once again he has left six million voters' information vulnerable and this happened twice before", Abrams told George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America" on Monday, likely in reference to a pair reported data breaches in Georgia in 2015 and 2017 that exposed the information on millions of residents.

On policy, the principal dividing lines are health care (Abrams wants to expand Medicaid insurance; Kemp wants to maintain Georgia's refusal and boost rural hospitals); education (Kemp supports private school vouchers; Abrams opposes them); and criminal justice (Kemp is a law-and-order Republican; Abrams focuses on rehabilitating non-violent offenders and criticizes cash bail as unfair to poorer defendants).

They published a story Sunday just as Kemp's office released its statement accusing Democrats of attempted hacking.

"It's a complete and utter fabrication", she said. And I don't even want you to vote for us just because we're Democrats.

Abrams, meanwhile, continued as she has throughout her campaign noting the potential historical significance but arguing the contest should be about more. 11th hour, cynical ploys come as no surprise from Brian Kemp, a man who raided the offices of organizations who register people to vote and had a woman arrested for helping her blind father cast his ballot. "You need to vote for us because we're better".
