  • Final Fantasy XV DLC plans canceled amid Hajime Tabata's departure

As part of Final Fantasy XV's two-year anniversary celebration, Square Enix announced that it is getting a special crossover with Final Fantasy XIV that will bring a side quest featuring a Miqo'te, Garuda, and more. Square Enix announced all four of them at the same time way back in April, and each DLC was meant to focus on a specific character: Ardyn, Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis. With Tabata taking leave of the company and the Final Fantasy XV project, three of the four planned DLC expansions have been cancelled. Meanwhile, the internal game studio Luminous Productions that was originally working on the DLC will focus on AAA titles going forward. Given the investment already made in the DLC, Square are writing off $33 million as an "extraordinary loss".

As for the game's director, Hajime Tabata, he announced his leaving Square Enix as a positive move for him and the company, stating that it was time for him to "hand over the torch to the next generation". However, no further details were divulged on what this new title is. There's no doubt that Square Enix sunk quite a bit of money into the extra Final Fantasy XV content, which probably had something to do with their financial loss.

Earlier this year, Square Enix formed a new AAA development studio known as Luminous Studios, moving Tabata and a large portion of the Final Fantasy XV development team over. As of today, Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis have all been scrapped and will not see a release.

Tabata hasn't announced what he will be doing next but Luminous Productions will continue to exist under Square Enix. "I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV". Final Fantasy XV was considered a success, but this news does put an abrupt end to the for future episode DLCs planned for the game.

"For that reason, I have chose to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal".

In addition, Square Enix confirmed Tabata's departure through a written statement.
