Kevin Anderson will take on French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem in the afternoon session.

Roger Federer will be aiming to win his 100th title at the ATP World Tour Finals at London's O2 arena but will have to get past Novak Djokovic, who will also be looking to finish an impressive season in style.

Former champion Andy Murray, still making his way back from injury, and defending champion Grigor Dimitrov are other star names missing.

"I've played well since 2011 even though I didn't end up winning the World Tour Finals any more but I feel like I've done well and it doesn't feel like it's that long ago".

The Swiss 20-time Grand Slam champion is playing in the season-ending finale for a 16th time and has tasted victory on a record six occasions - twice in London, twice at Shanghai and twice in Houston.

"I have done everything possible to reach the end of the season in good condition, both in Paris and London, doing things well and I really wanted to play. Maybe until Monte Carlo I was playing terribly and didn't feel like I had any confidence, and I wasn't playing good tennis at that time".

Federer will have been buoyed by his battling performance against Djokovic in the semi-final of the Paris Masters last week but he still lost the match - his fourth consecutive defeat against Djokovic, with the Serb now leading their head-to-head 25-22.

The ATP, the governing body of men's professional tennis, announced in August the opening of an global tender process to determine the future location of the season finale featuring the world's best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams.

Speaking about his injury, the 31-year old Djokovic said, "But there was always part of me that believed I could make it back and I never thought it was impossible".

"It turned to out to be a flawless five months of the year, with two Grand Slam titles", he added.

"So that was exciting for me, and personally I was pumped and I thought it was a great inaugural World Tour Finals, what you call it now, at the time", he continued. "So I'm still happy we're there, and we'll see what happens in the future", he added.

Rafael Nadal has made a decision to end his season early after suffering an abdominal injury ahead of the Paris Masters last week.

That followed the injury withdrawal of Del Potro, who reached a career-high ranking of third this season and reached the final of the London event in 2009.
