  • Active shooter at North Carolina high school, police on scene: reports

Sheriff's deputies in North Carolina are responding to reports of an active shooter at Topsail High School about 20 miles north of Wilmington.

The county school system notified parents of a reported active shooter in a tweet.

Rowell with sheriff's office says there are no reported injuries.

Captain James Rowell told WECT the school remained an "active scene" but that there were no reported injuries as of 7am local time.

There was a heavy law enforcement presence at the school, which is located at 245 N. Saint Johns Church Road in Hampstead, when the reports of an active shooter first surfaced.

Live footage shows numerous law enforcement agencies now at the school where the scene remains active.

The commissioner, identified as George Brown, said the noise that sounded like gunfire may have been a piece of equipment at the school that has been malfunctioning in recent days. The school district asked staff from Topsail elementary, middle and high schools to meet at the grocery store.

All Pender County schools in the eastern part of the county are on lockdown.

All of the schools in the district have been placed in lock down. Students that were already on buses were transported to the Lowes Foods across from the school.

Officials have confirmed the "active shooter" was, in fact, malfunctioning equipment. It has around 1,300 students enrolled.
