Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a safety alert to flight crews about potential erroneous readings from a sensor in its latest 737 Max 8 aircraft, following last month's Lion Air crash in Indonesia.

Indonesia's transportation safety committee said it had agreed with Boeing on procedures that the airplane manufacturer should distribute globally on how flight crews can deal with the sensor problems.

That sensor is meant to maintain air flow over a plane's wings but if it malfunctions it can cause the plane's computers to erroneously think it is in a aerodynamic stall - which can then cause aircraft to abruptly dive.

All 189 people on board Flight 610 died when the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed into the sea on October 29, 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta on a short flight to Pangkal Pinang on the Indonesian island of Bangka.

Indonesian investigators on Monday said an airspeed indicator had malfunctioned on the plane's last four flights.

Flight JT610, which killed all 189 people on board, was the first major accident involving the 737 MAX. Pilots are supposed to memorize a procedure to disengage the angle-of-attack inputs to the plane's computer system. The committee said the pilots were dealing with an erroneous airspeed indication.

Aircraft and engine manufacturers routinely send bulletins to air carriers noting safety measures and maintenance actions they should take, majority relatively routine.

Now Boeing is warning pilots and airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, that they could experience similar issues with their Boeing 737 Max planes, the same model as the Lion Air plane that crashed.

On Wednesday night, Lion Air aborted a flight when one of its planes damaged a wing tip when it struck a lamp pole before takeoff from Bengkulu. It is believed the plane plunged at over 600mph, but the cause of the accident is still under investigation. The head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, Soerjanto Tjahjono, told reporters in Jakarta on Monday that he was discussing the options for wider inspections with Boeing and his us counterparts.

He said the pilot had landed the plane safely on that occasion. The aircraft system that handles the nose up and down movement (called stabilizer trim system) will put the nose down in response to the erroneous AOA sensor.

"Over the last 40 years, Boeing and Chinese partners have built deep relations in all industrial chains, including the research of new technologies, parts manufacturing as well as flight maintenance and modification", the statement said. Once that happens, it may try to right itself by pushing the nose down, reports the Straight Times.
