Istanbul chief prosecutor Irfan Fidan said this week that Khashoggi was suffocated as soon as he entered the consulate, and his body was then cut up and disposed of.

Khashoggi, who lived in the United States and wrote columns for the Washington Post, went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to collect some documents, but he never reappeared.

Meanwhile, a Turkish official said he believes Khashoggi's body was dissolved in acid or other chemicals after it was mutilated.

Khashoggi disappeared shortly after entering the consulate October 2 to obtain documents for his planned marriage, with Saudi officials giving shifting explanations for his death.

While insisting the United States did not condone Khashoggi's killing, the top USA diplomat said the United States had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

Anonymous Saudi officials have pushed a theory that Jamal Khashoggi's body was rolled up in some kind of fabric and given to a Turkish coconspirator.

Meanwhile, U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet called Tuesday for an worldwide role in the investigation "free of any appearance of political considerations".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the slaying of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi a horrendous act that "should be duly dealt with" in a way that doesn't undermine Saudi Arabia's stability.

Johnnie Moore, the group's spokesman who also serves as the White House's unofficial liaison to conservative evangelicals, said they "discussed" Khashoggi's killing, but declined to elaborate, and he insisted they were not representing Israel or Trump in any way.

"Khashoggi's body was not in need of burying", the official told the U.S. newspaper on the condition of anonymity.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday demanded that Saudi Arabia reveal the location of Khashoggi's body and hand over 18 suspects.

The newspaper quoted "people familiar with the calls" as saying that Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi defended bin Salman, saying his effective leadership of Saudi Arabia had important strategic implications. But the official did not offer any proof for his comments.

In an interview with ABC News on Thursday, Cengiz called on President Donald Trump to help bring Khashoggi's killers to justice.

According to reports, Pompeo told a Saint Louis radio station the U.S.is still in the process of gathering evidence.

She added, "It is now up to the worldwide community to bring the perpetrators to justice". "And to deliver Jamal's body, which is still missing, to his loved ones.", she wrote.

She also slammed the United States, which shares economic interests with Saudi Arabia, on its inaction in condemning Saudi Arabia. "They have only emboldened it".

Khashoggi had entered the consulate to get papers he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who waited for him outside for hours before she alerted Turkish authorities.

"At the consulate, I was left at the door alone".
