The Colorado man accused of slaying his pregnant wife and young daughters pleaded guilty to their gruesome murders in a deal that would spare him the death penalty.

The district attorney agreed to drop the death penalty in exchange for Mr Watts accepting all nine charges against him as part of a plea bargain.

Watts initially claimed he killed his wife in an act of passion after finding one daughter dead and Shanann trying to kill the other.

Watts acknowledged strangling his wife, Shanann, 34, and their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, and dumping their bodies in an oil field belonging to Anadarko Petroleum, where Watts had worked until he was arrested in the case, according to Denver 7 News.

He arrived the court wearing a bullet proof vest and sobbed each time he pleaded guilty to each of the nine charges.

His wife was buried there and the girls were submerged in crude oil, with their remains found by police who used a drone to search areas identified by Watts.

"The tragedy that sits before us today is the loss of four handsome lives", Rourke said, "and no matter what happens today or at a sentencing hearing down the road, we cant get them back". "That's about as firmly as she could have said it to me". He said a judge has not formally accepted the guilty pleas or the sentence.

Chris is set to be sentenced on November 19 and faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Christopher Watts, 33, said he had killed Shannann Watts after seeing her strangling one of their children on a baby monitor.

While both Rourke and CBI Director John Camper said they hope this provides some closure and sense of justice, they also recognized that nothing that happens in the courtroom can fix what happened in the Watts' Frederick home in August.

Under Colorado law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.

"That, to me, was the most important consideration in deciding how to proceed with this case", Mr Rourke said.

When asked how he feels, Rourke said "sick" and "saddened".

"The spotlight he tried to shine on Shanann, falsely, incorrectly.is now shined correctly on him", Rourke said.

Still, he cautioned: Though the family was present for Chris' plea and the subsequent presser, they were "not prepared nor do they want to answer questions at this point".
