ABC News is reporting Marsha Blackburn as the projected victor in the U.S. Senate race in Tennessee, defeating opponent Phil Bredesen.

She portrayed herself as a Republican firebrand, saying she carried a gun in her purse and unwaveringly supported Trump's plan to build a wall along the southern border.

Although Bredesen ran as a Democrat, he largely ran away from the national party and regularly touted his ties to the state and independence from Washington, D.C. The strategy was clear: He hoped to bank on the fact he won every county in the state in 2006 during his second run for governor and looked to tag Blackburn as a traditional Washington ideologue. She will be the first woman in U.S.to represent her state in the Senate. Bob Corker, who had frequently clashed with President Donald Trump.

Bredesen had been viewed as one of the Democrats' best hopes in the party's quest to regain majority control of the Senate. She backed Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court the same day Trump nominated him, and criticized Bredesen for taking so long to say he would have supported Kavanaugh's confirmation as well. Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.

Those qualities weren't enough, however, to win over a state that President Trump won in 2016 by 26 points. Marco Rubio of Florida, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina also came along for separate campaign events. "With Marsha, you knew what you were going to get".

John Geer, Dean of the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University and political science professor, said in the lead-up to election night that moderate Republicans who were drawn to figures like outgoing Gov. Bill Haslam and Sen. When the pundits had all but counted her out, she just fought harder. She will now continue the fight as Senator.
