In all, three major fires are burning across the state.

Residents have now been ordered to evacuate from several more towns to the west of Thousand Oaks, including Calabasas immediately south of Highway 101 and Malibu on the coast, as well as from the western edge of Los Angeles.

And on Friday, Newsom also declared a state of emergency for the raging fires also ravaging Ventura County near Los Angeles as well.

Meteorologists marvelled at the "gut-wrenching" rate of spread Thursday's fires exhibited.

Fire officials issued evacuation notices for homes on the east side of Chico, a city of about 93,000 people situated about 145 kilometres north of Sacramento.

Actor Rainn Wilson said that resident of Thousand Oaks, still reeling from a Wednesday night shooting in which a gunman killed 12 people at a bar before killing himself, were now having to flee their homes. She and her husband grabbed their dog, jumped in their pickup truck and drove through flames before getting to safety, she said.

At midday on Friday local time, it covered about 5665 hectares.

There was alarm among some residents who anxious smoke created near the hazardous site could prove particularly unsafe, but authorities from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control who oversee the site say there is no evidence that smoke from the area around the SSFL is any more risky than other wildfire smoke. Residents awoke to the stench of smoke and the morning horizon drenched in an ashen-orange that was hard to see or drive through, hindering evacuations.

"I was frantic", she said.

Actress Alyssa Milano, one of Kardashian's neighbors in Calabasas, wrote on Twitter that she was also evacuated.

Her husband, the rapper Kanye West, said their family was "safe and close".

The singer Cher, who is performing in Las Vegas, tweeted that she was anxious about her Malibu home.

The massive blaze spread north Friday, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills.

No injuries have been reported in either fire.

Where is the Camp Fire?

Fanned by strong winds, it has scorched 70,000 acres (28,300 hectares) and has not been contained, the California Fire Department (Cal Fire) said. Ninety-nine homes were destroyed in the same area in 1956.

In the first official report of fatalities, the Butte County Sheriff tweeted on Friday that investigators had found five dead bodies.

Actor James Woods started the hashtag #CampFireJamesWoods, retweeting missing-person reports to his more than 1.8 million followers.

"This event was the worst-case scenario", he said. "We pretty much had enough time to get the dogs in the trunk". Los Angeles Fire Department Public Information Officer Erik Scott says the blaze has destroyed or damaged many buildings.

On the outskirts of town, Patrick Knuthson, a fourth-generation resident, said only two of the 22 homes that once stood on his street are still there - his and a neighbor's. In Southern California, fire burning through wind-whipped palm trees on Thursday resembled a hurricane.

The flames descended on Paradise so quickly that many people were forced to abandon their cars and run for their lives down the sole road through the mountain town.

Numerous people reported missing on social media are elderly.

Evacuation zones were posted on Cal Fire's website.

The three wildfires now burning in California are moving across land with a terrifying speed.

With the Camp Fire still raging, Butte County school officials have made a decision to close all public schools until at least after the Thanksgiving break.
