The condition of The CliffsofMoher, which was being ridden by star English jockey Ryan Moore, is not yet known.

Regal Monarch, trained by Chris Waller, was euthanised after falling in race four a year ago, while British stayer Red Cadeaux was put down two weeks after falling and breaking a leg in the 2015 Melbourne Cup. The horse was euthanised after the race at Flemington.

In 2015, crowd favourite and three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux had to be euthanised two-and-a-half weeks after the Cup as a result of complications from an injury suffered in that year's race.

The Cliffsofmoher was euthanised on the track after fracturing his shoulder early in the Melbourne Cup.

UPDATES: THE horse that exited midway through the Melbourne Cup - the Aidan O'Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher - has been euthanased.

It tarnished a thrilling win by Cross Counter, who saluted ahead of Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran.

"The horse received immediate veterinary care, however it was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained", he added.

The victor stormed down from the outside in the final several hundred meters for a length victory.

Animal welfare groups led the calls for an inquiry into the death of The Cliffsofmoher, which was one of the leading fancies heading into the Melbourne Cup but was a late betting drifter after sweating up in the parade. "What a field to do it in".

"They [Godolphin] have been striving to win this race for a long time", McEvoy said.

The Cliffsofmoher is not the first horse to be put down at the Melbourne Cup.

During the trophy presentation, rain which had affected the lead-up to the race again started to fall at Flemington.

"It's very sad but it could have been worse".

"We collided with the horse that broke down pretty hard and it put us out of play completely", Avilius' jockey Glyn Schofield said.

"Coming over here it was a big thing on our bucket list", said the 43-year-old Englishman, who trains in Newmarket.

Sportsbet on Tuesday said Perth punters were favouring favourites Magic Circle ($7), Yucatan ($7) and Marmelo ($13) but also had a soft spot for the outsiders.

Japan-based Chestnut Coat, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, was 14th.
