  • Emma Thompson is made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Prince William at Buckingham Palace London Wednesday Nov. 7 2018

Emma Thompson stands outside Buckingham Palace, London, after being made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Prince William on Wednesday Nov. 7, 2018.

Cape Town - Emma Thompson was all of us when she asked Prince William if she could kiss him while receiving her damehood. Alas, her hopes were dashed.

She said: "I'd like to inspire others and empower others to believe in themselves, especially people with Down's syndrome". The ceremony officially made her a Dame Commander of the British Empire - the female equivalent of a knighthood - for her services to drama.

In a Phoebe Philo-inspired move, the actress teamed the ensemble with a pair of box-fresh trainers - a fashion move we would love to hear Her Majesty's thoughts on.

That's right, Thompson saved herself from wearing a pair of fancy heels that surely would have distracted her during her big moment with Prince William.

She added "If you're first up you have to be more formal on such an occasion, but he's looking wonderful and doing so well. He said, 'This day isn't about me, it's about you'".

Yet despite her successful career, the actress confessed to feeling shy around Prince William revealing: "I love Prince William".

Thompson wore a teal suit and white sneakers to the event, according to Vanity Fair.

"They send you a letter saying, 'Will you accept it?'" Thompson told Seth Meyers on his late-night talk show.

Thompson's family, husband Greg Wise and their children Tindy and Gaia, were also in attendance at the ceremony and posed for a photo together after the actress received the award.
