‘Walking Dead’ Season 9 Premiere Is Lowest-Rated in Series History

  • Walking Dead season 9 premiere loses nearly half its audience

The Walking Dead has been steadily heading downhill for a while now. The previous low number belonged to the 2010 series premiere, which stood with a 2.7 rating.

Still, The Walking Dead's ratings peaked in season 5 (with a season premiere of more than 17 million viewers) and have ebbed each year since. While the current rating doesn't account for late or recorded viewings, it's unlikely that the episode will even come close to prior premieres. The lowest season premiere ratings still belong to Season 1, which garnered 5.35 million viewers. Fortunately there's good news for both players and those who made the game, because Robert Kirkman's Skybound will complete the last season of the game, and they're hoping to work with the former staff of Telltale to do it.

Year to year, the Season 9 premiere of TWD was down a further 14% in total audience from the fall the Season 8 opener saw after the series' near all-time high of the double death Season 7 debut of October 23, 2016. These numbers make the season 9 opener stand as the lowest-rated premiere in the history of the series. But this wasn't just bad news in terms of season premieres-Season 9's first episode is almost tied with the series' lowest rating for any episode in the key demo, with a Season 1 episode's 2.4 rating standing as the lowest rated episode thus far. (AMC did not say how many people signed up, however.) But Walking Dead will continue to tower over all other series on cable. Besides an 18-month time jump, the nascent season 9 storyline is clearly gearing up for the imminent exits of stars Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, continuing the intriguing arc of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's imprisoned big bad, Negan, while heralding the arrival of the frightening new group of antagonists in the predatory, walker-skin-mask-wearing group known as The Whisperers, led by Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Beta (Ryan Hurst).
