  • The BSR Surf Resort voluntarily closed down its wave pool after a surfer infected with Naegleria fowleri died since visiting the park. CDC is working to determine the source of the amoeba

The amoeba, also known as Naegleria fowleri, is "incredibly rare", but is naturally occurring in warm, fresh and sometimes stagnant water.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is testing BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort, in Central Texas, for Naegleria fowleri, a rare but highly deadly ameba colloquially known as a "brain-eating amoeba".

Parsons said Stabile had been in the park's wave pool.

Fabrizio "Fab" Stabile, 29, of Ventnor, N.J., died September 21 - five days after complaining of a severe, sudden headache.

Syabile was pronounced brain dead on Sep.

Fabrizio Stabile, 29, died September 21, according to his obituary.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba which is a single-celled living organism.

KTBS reported that tests by the Louisiana Department and of Health and Hospitals at the Sligo Water System were positive for Naegleria fowleri. "Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community during this hard time", park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. said in a statement, per the AP.

He said the surf resort, which operates an artificial man-made wave, is in compliance with the CDC's "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".

Stabile's family have launched a GoFundMe for the Fabrizio Stabile Foundation for Naegleria Fowleri Awareness, in hopes of educating more people about the infection.

According to the CDC, there have only been 143 diagnosed cases of the parasite in the 56 years since it was discovered.

No other sites tested showed contamination, according to the water system.

Three of those survivors were treated with drug therapy, but in Stabile's case it was too late to administer the medication.
