Venom also dominated the global box office with $125.2 million, setting an worldwide opening record.

One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom. The film, which is the fourth "A Star Is Born" since 1937, has built up huge buzz for its emotional story, strong performances and solid direction from first time director and star Bradley Cooper. Never mind that it's not connected to Tom Holland's Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point, and Spider-Man isn't in the movie.

Branding itself as a departure from superhero movies through its focus on anti-hero Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), Venom has also nabbed a solid B+ Cinemascore. That's a record-breaking figure for the month of October and it puts the movie on pace to have the biggest opening weekend ever for the month, which is now held by the 2013 movie "Gravity" ($55.78 million).

Warner Bros' A Star is Born, the third remake of the classic 1937 film of the same name, also had a fine debut as well, earning 40 million dollars. "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer helmed the film, which carries a $100 million budget.

"This is a movie that will be around for months", Goldstein added.

According to estimates Sunday, the two very different films fueled an unusually robust October weekend at the North American box office.

Lionsgate-CBS Films' second weekend of "Hell Fest" was battling for eighth place with Warner's eighth weekend of "Crazy Rich Asians" with $2.1 million each.

In the US, Venom and A Star is Born were trailed by Smallfoot in third ($14.9 million), followed by Night School ($12.3 million) and The House With A Clock In Its Walls ($7 million).
