  • Questions linger after journalist disappears

The Turkish ministry of foreign affairs had stated that Saudi Arabia has provided all assistance and cooperation in the case of the missing journalist who has disappeared in Istanbul last week.

Turkish authorities have claimed they have surveillance camera video of Khashoggi entering the consulate but never leaving. But Turkey has formally requested access to search the Saudi Consulate as part of what Turkish officials say is a murder investigation.

He added that investigations are still ongoing. But he tempered his comments, saying: "Hopefully that will sort itself out".

Turan Kislakci, a friend of Khashoggi, said the 59-year-old told him he had been invited to return to Riyadh by the crown prince to act as an adviser.

Turkey's security services who are investigating Khashoggi's disappearance believe that within two hours of his arrival at the Saudi consulate last week, a "team of Saudi agents" killed him and then dismembered him with a bone saw that was brought in specifically for that goal.

The Saudi consulate in Istanbul issued a statement Sunday, saying reports that Kashoggi was murdered inside the building were "baseless allegations".

Cengiz wrote in the op-ed that Khashoggi had gone to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul "despite being somewhat concerned that he could be in danger".

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously said officials are welcome to conduct a search as there is nothing to hide. He moved to the USA more than a year ago, where he continued his commentary about his country both in print and on television.

Jamal Khashoggi is one of the Arab world's most prominent journalists and commentators.

Erdogan was informed of the conclusions on Saturday, according to several people with knowledge of the briefings, and he has since dispatched officials to anonymously tell myriad news outlets, including The New York Times, that Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate.

The country has demanded Saudi Arabia prove he left, while not providing evidence to support the claim he was killed inside.

Human rights activists hold pictures of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a protest outside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey Oct. 9, 2018. As a contributor to the Post, Mr Khashoggi has written extensively and critically about Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabian officials "must prove" that journalist Khashoggi, who has been missing since last week, had left the Istanbul consulate, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says during a press conference in Hungary. She also asked the Saudi government to release closed-circuit TV footage from inside the consulate to shed light on what happened to her fiancé.

"We would like to know exactly what happened inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance", said Mohamed Okad, a friend of Khashoggi and founder of Insight into Crisis, a conflict advisory group. As a columnist for the Washington Post, Khashoggi has criticized Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his policies. "I know nothing right now". He has not been heard from since October 2, when he entered a Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey to receive marriage paperwork. "Why don't you prove it, you have to prove it".

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said that the US officials had seen "conflicting reports" about the status of the Washington Post contributor, and so were unwilling to "make any judgments about what happened to him".
