Treasurers set to ditch GST on tampons

  • The price of tampons could fall within months following today’s meeting

A range of sanitary products, including tampons and pads, will have the tax removed, although the full list has yet to be determined.

In 2015, a petition against the tax was signed by more than 90,000 people.

"We think that this is an unfair tax".

Scott Morrison has his first visit to Perth as Prime Minister to promotes his GST legislation.

.

The long-running campaign to remove the GST from women's sanitary products in Australia will finally succeed with state and territory treasurers today backing a plan by the federal government to remove the 10% tax.

Minister for Women, Kelly O'Dwyer also described the tax as "unfair" to Seven Network.

No date has been announced for the repeal of the tax, but according to the ABC, it will cost state governments $30 million a year.

"Millions of women right across the nation will be very thankful for it."

Victorian Greens Senator Janet Rice (centre) addresses the media outside of the Commonwealth Parliament Offices in Melbourne, Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

Speaking in August, then-Treasurer Scott Morrison agreed, arguing the "tampon tax" should never have been put in place, admitting it was time for the tax to be culled. "Here's a straightforward practical opportunity to deal with it once and for all", he told News Corp.

"I think ultimately Labor will see that this should be passed and I'm confident it will be".

The changes to the GST come after several long-running complaints from states like Western Australia who felt they were unfairly disadvantaged by the old system.

In July, the government unveiled a major reform to the GST formula, in which an additional $6.4 billion (A$9 billion) in federal money would be made available over a period of 10 years, in an effort to ensure no state falls below a fixed benchmark.

Treasurers are discussing the planned introduction of a 75 cent floor in GST payments, and the eastern states are concerned they will be worse off.

"The crab walk seems to be starting from him when it comes to the fairer deal on the GST that WA deserves", Mr Morrison told reporters in Perth on Tuesday.

The policy, which is expected to give the Coalition a political boost in Western Australia, prompted five state treasurers - including Liberals from NSW, South Australia and Tasmania - to stand "united on the issue".
