Toyota has said it is recalling a total of 2.43 million hybrid vehicles around the world over a hybrid system issue which can lead to stalling.

The global recall covers Prius and Auris models produced between October 2008 and November 2014 and affects 8,476 vehicles sold in Australia.

It is the second recall for the Prius in the space of a month, with the previous one involving more than 1 million hybrid cars due to the risk of fire.

The carmaker is recalling 2.43 million of its hybrid vehicles worldwide, including 1.25 million in Japan, 807,000 in the United States, 290,000 in Europe and 3,000 in China.

Vehicles sold in China, Africa, Oceania and other regions are also affected.

Toyota said it would update the software in the vehicles for free.

When a fault is discovered in the hybrid system, the cars in question should default to a "failsafe" driving mode (often referred to as "limp" mode) that will allow the vehicle enough power to get off the road and to a safe place.

The problem identified arises when the cars fail to enter "failsafe driving mode as intended". Power steering and braking would still work but a stall at a fast speed could increase risks of a crash.

Japan's transportation ministry said Toyota had reported three malfunctions locally related to the issue, but no accidents.

This could cause the vehicle to possibly stall.

In 2016, Toyota announced the recall of 3.37 million vehicles globally over problems with air bags and a fuel emission control unit.
