  • Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic remain on course for Shanghai Masters showdown

"If you want to make the victor you have to take a lot of risks, it seems like".

Zverev will qualify for the season-ending tournament in London if he reaches the semi-finals this week and he remains on course to do just that after seeing off Basilashvili 7-5 6-4.

"I didn't play many poor matches, to be quite honest".

He will play the Japanese eighth seed Kei Nishikori in the last eight, while Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev are also through, albeit with far less hassle.

Curiously, Bautista Agut - who is better known for his durability and baseline rallies - served more aces than Federer and he had the better of proceedings in the second and third sets.

The pair traded breaks at the start of the second, with Bautista Agut responding with a break to love courtesy of a rasping backhand return victor after a demoralising opening game of the set.

The 37-year-old Swiss top seed faces Spain's unseeded Roberto Bautista Agut on Thursday in the last 16.

Third seed Del Potro won four straight games from 3-5 down in the opening set before recovering from 2-6 deficit in the second set tiebreak to set up a third round meeting with Croatian Borna Coric.

Djokovic earned partial revenge when he beat Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-0. I always say when you win a Slam in any season, it's actually a very good season already. I did everything that I needed to win.

In the second set, both players looked pretty solid on serve despite Del Potro coughing profusely the whole time and Gasquet struggling with some blisters on his right foot as the set headed to a tiebreak. The Serb is on a 15-match winning streak, which includes title runs at Cincinnati and the U.S. Open.

The Spanish former Wimbledon and French Open champion brushed aside Romania's Ana Bogdan with the loss of only three games to underline her status as one of the tournament favourites.

Djokovic will take on seventh-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa, whom he leads 6-1 on head-to-heads.

Fifth-seeded Marin Cilic became the highest seed toppled in Shanghai when 48th-ranked Nicolas Jarry of Chile rebounded for a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 second-round win.

He will play Alex de Minaur in the last-16 after his 6-4 6-3 victory against Benoit Paire.
