With an estimated 450 million persons now affected by mental disorders, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared mental disorders as one of the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.

Dr Sweta Adatia, specialist neurologist at RAK Hospital and RAK Diabetes Centre, Dubai, advises to tap into the power of the Vagus Nerve to improve and strengthen one's mental health. "There needs to be a curriculum which integrates life skill training as well as understanding mental health in the syllabus", he suggests.

"The impact of these tragedies has made people ask a lot of questions about how we are dealing with mental health issues in our midst".

"I felt helpless as it is hard to monitor what is happening online". Another way of doing this is to practice mindfulness, a therapeutic technique where you focus your awareness on the present moment.

Give -giving can be very rewarding and can enhance feelings of self-worth. If you are concerned about a friend or family member's mental health, the best way to help is to listen, or to open up a conversation where that person feels they could talk to you if they wanted.

Today Mrs May will announce the launch of a new campaign to train a million people in mental health awareness, starting with a pilot in the West Midlands. We have support groups that meet every week and we also have those for people living with mental illness.

World Mental Health Day, 10 October, is a day for global mental health education and advocacy; an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health to raise public awareness of mental issues worldwide. It may be reoccurring headaches, an upset stomach, or a rapid heart rate.

When a young person often feels anxious or worried; has frequent stomachaches or headaches with no physical explanation; experiences difficulty with sleep, loses interest in things they once enjoyed doing; isolates themselves; has trouble in school or their grades begin to decline; feels exhausted, lacks energy or is disconnected; fears weight gain, constantly exercises, or develops unusual food consumption; or engages in risky, destructive behavior, including drinking, smoking, or other drug use.

Physical activity can help relieve stress as it relaxes the muscles and alleviates tension in the body. Physical activity can also be a great way to meet people and have fun.

He called for strengthened collaborations among stakeholders to build mental health resilience from an early age to help prevent the mental distress and illnesses among adolescents and young adults and to manage recovery.

Dr Ramadan AlBlooshi, CEO, Dubai Healthcare City Authority - Regulatory, said, "In line with the Dubai Government's efforts, the DHCC aims to create a culture in which people feel safe and comfortable to talk about their issues, and are guaranteed the best care". Similarly, an employer that offers these benefits via a group insurance product, will also see increased staff loyalty which can lead to reduced recruitment costs, and fewer and shorter staff absences which again reduces recruitment costs for temporary cover too.
