'That was a quick flight': Crew of failed rocket keeps cool

The booster rocket carrying a Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian and United States astronaut on board headed for the International Space Station failed mid-air on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing. Though it's hard to make out what's going on in the image, it seems that it was taken just moments after the crew capsule detached from the spacecraft and started heading back toward Earth.

USA astronaut Nick Hague, right and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, member of the main crew of the expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), walk prior to the launch of Soyuz MS-10 space ship at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018.

The Soyuz MS-10, a Russian spacecraft, was transporting NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, when it launched from Kazakhstan.

The Russian capsule experienced a booster problem which meant the two-man crew's six-month mission to the International Space Station has had to be delayed.

"The Soyuz capsule is returning to Earth via a ballistic descent, which is a sharper angle of landing compared to normal", NASA said in a brief statement via Twitter.

Search and rescue teams were deployed to the landing site. The capsule landed about 20 kilometres east of the city of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. The city is about 450 kilometers from the Russia's Baikonur space center, which Russian Federation operates through an agreement with the Republic of Kazakhstan. You know the complexity of returning a capsule [with the crew] which should be jettisoned from the engine and land with the use of a parachute.

Soyuz flights are suspended while the Russian space agency Roscosmos investigates the cause of the failure.

It comes weeks after a hole was discovered in the International Space Station amid talk from the Russian space authorities of deliberate sabotage. In 2013, he joined NASA's astronaut corps and is the first member of his class to be assigned to a mission and fly into space, Wiseman said.

"The crew has landed".

The aborted mission dealt another blow to the troubled Russian space program that now serves as the only way to deliver astronauts to the orbiting outpost.

NASA mothballed its space-shuttle program in 2011, and since then has been paying Russian Federation about $80 million for each trip ferrying a USA astronaut to the station.

There are now three crew members aboard the ISS: NASA astronaut Serena M. Auñón-Chancellor, the European Space Agency's Alexander Gerst, and cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev. That 0.08-inch (2-millimeter) hole in the orbital module of the Soyuz vehicle created a small air leak on the space station that was detected by flight controllers on the ground and ultimately repaired by astronauts and cosmonauts on the space station.

Two astronauts made an emergency landing in Kazakhstan after the failure of Soyuz rocket.
