Taylor Swift exhorted Americans to "get out and vote" in the forthcoming United States midterm elections as she broke Whitney Houston's record as the woman to have won the most American Music Awards.

Taylor Swift, who just wrapped the North American leg of her "Reputation" tour, kicked off the show with her single "I Did Something Bad".

The award was presented to Taylor by Lenny Kravitz. The midterm elections on 6 November.

Voting was a hot topic at the AMAs.

Host Tracee Ellis Ross sported a white T-shirt for part of the evening saying "I am a voter", and presenter Billy Eichner, best known for the TV comedy "Parks and Recreation", urged the youth audience to register to vote.

XXXTentacion's mother, Cleopatra, accepted the prize on stage, she said: "I am honoured".

Explaining her decision to wear the slinky number to the AMAs, Hudgens told Entertainment Tonight, "It's classic, it's chic, and I'm here for J.Lo, so I figured that was the way to go".


Despite having the year's top-selling album and three No. 1 hits, Drake didn't win a single award. The rapper Cardi B won three awards, including one in tandem with Bruno Mars for their track Finesse.

Migos won Favorite Duo/Group in either hip-hop or rock, beating out radio favorites, Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5.

Seeing news reports on how her snake stole the show, Taylor uploaded an Instagram Story writing: 'Thank you for liking my duet w/ Karyn'.

Ciara and Missy Elliott destroyed the stage with a performance of the viral "Level Up".
