Second tremor at Cuadrilla site

But the exploration company said "micro seismic" events like this do not cause any damage and can not be felt at ground level.

A Cuadrilla spokeswoman said that, as the operations had finished before the detection, "This is not an "red" incident under the traffic light system operated by the Oil and Gas Authority as we were not pumping fracturing fluid as part of our hydraulic fracturing operations at the time".

"Operations have now paused for the next 18 hours during which seismicity levels will continue to be measured".

The quake, which measured 0.8 on the Richter Scale, is the thirteenth recorded by the British Geological Survey, and is the biggest one recorded in the area since fracking began last Monday. Environmental activists failed in early October in Britain's High Court to keep fracking from proceeding in northwest England.

The exploration is the first fracking in the United Kingdom for seven years, after work by Cuadrilla was halted in 2011 following two tremors near Blackpool.

The Guardian revealed earlier this month that the energy minister, Claire Perry, had proposed raising the regulatory threshold for tremors caused by fracking as the industry begins to mature.

Saturday's tremor is the 18th in the area since fracking recommenced 12 days ago. Fracking restarted on Saturday morning before a second tremor was detected.

Operations have been suspended at the UK's only active shale gas fracking site following an natural disaster - just 11 days after it was given the go ahead.

Cuadrilla said earlier this month it would spend at least three months fracking two horizontal wells and then test to see if the gas flow was commercially viable.

The news comes after Caudrilla's fracking places in Lancashire have been stopped. It involves pumping water, chemicals and usually sand underground at high pressure to fracture shale - hence the name - and release the gas trapped within to be collected back at the surface.

The water fractures the rocks, creating dozens of cracks through which gas and heat can escape to the surface.

During the quake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they continue to move until they get stuck again.
