When asked about a response to the disappearance of Khashoggi, Sanders suggested a major shift in the United States relationship with Saudi Arabia and pointed to his previous call for the U.S. to separate from the war in Yemen, which he said was "causing a disgusting humanitarian disaster".

In a joint statement, Britain's foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian and Germany's Heiko Maas said whoever was responsible for the Saudi journalist's disappearance must be held to account.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., who as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has reviewed the USA intelligence into what happened to Khashoggi, has said, "The likelihood is he was killed on the day he walked into the consulate".

'We encourage joint Saudi-Turkish efforts in that regard, and expect the Saudi Government to provide a complete and detailed response'. "We have conveyed this message directly to the Saudi authorities".

Threatening to impose economic sanctions and repeating "false accusations" will not undermine the country's standing, said the statement on Saudi Arabia's official press agency, which quoted an "official source".

Both Turkey and Saudi Arabia are important USA allies in the region.

On US President Donald Trump's invitation to the White House, Cengiz said she would "consider accepting" such an invitation if Trump helped reveal what happened to Khashoggi. Writer Jamal Khashoggi, vanished after he walked into the consulate on October 2.

Oil traders are braced for a bumpy week after Saudi Arabia threatened to use its economic might in retaliation against any United States action following the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"If, as they say, this bad murder didn't happen, then where is Jamal Khashoggi?"

Two leading Senate Republicans on Sunday threatened tough punitive action by Congress against Saudi Arabia, including a possible halt of military sales, if missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi was indeed killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The Jordanian government has affirmed the central role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its leading role in establishing security, stability and peace and enhancing economic cooperation in the region and the world.

Turkey's foreign minister on Saturday accused Saudi Arabia of failing to cooperate in its probe, calling on Riyadh to grant access to Turkish investigators.

He added: "If Khashoggi was harmed, [Trump] will take action".

US senators called for reactions ranging from boycotting an upcoming economic summit in Riyadh to ending support for Saudi military operations in Yemen. "The truth is that if Washington imposes sanctions on Riyadh, it will stab its own economy to death, even though it thinks that it is stabbing only Riyadh!" he wrote.

"I tell you what we don't want to do".

This begs the question: just why is the US government involved in arms sales?

"There's been a hold for a long time", Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, of Tennessee, told CNN.

"We've all heard a lot about the audio", Trump said.

He said any response to Khashoggi's killing "needs to be strong, not symbolic", including the possibility of cutting off US weapons sales to Riyadh, or it would undermine the U.S.'s moral standing in the world. There's much more accountability with private companies than there are with governments when it comes to responding to bad press.
