COLOMBO: Sri Lanka batting great Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged with two counts of breaching the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption code, the world governing body said on Monday.

The World Cup victor and former national selector was charged on Monday on two counts - "failure or refusal" to co-operate with an investigation carried out by the anti-corruption unit and "obstructing or delaying" its work by concealing, tampering or destroying documentation or information.

"Unfortunately, I am not in a position any comments at the moment as I am initially required to submit my response within 14 days", the statement read. "I am under strict legal advice that no comment is to be made in respect of the charges as such a course would offend the ICC rules", the statement said.

Jayasuriya, 49, also pointed out that the charges laid upon him "do not contain any allegations pertaining to match fixing, pitch fixing or any other similar corrupt activity", and that they were charges that allege he has not been co-operative with the ACU's investigations only.

It is unknown which fixtures the charges relate to, or if anyone else is involved.

However, the ICC said it doesn't want to elaborate on the charges and did not state the exact reason as it why Jayasuriya came under the scanner.

The ICC's ACU is acting further on their previous investigation which in January 2016 saw Galle stadium curator Jayananda Warnaweera banned for three years after he failed to cooperate with the ACU.

ACU head Marshall last month said: "The ACU works to uphold integrity in cricket and this includes conducting investigations where there are reasonable grounds to do so".

The news has rocked Sri Lanka, who are now hosting a one-day series against England, the top-ranked team in the world. "Naturally as part of this we are talking to a number of people".

The Jayasuriya-led selection panel resigned en masse past year following protests over Sri Lanka's slump in form.

In 445 one-day internationals, the former all-rounder scored 28 centuries and claimed 323 wickets.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain opined that Jayasuriya's anti-corruption charge is just "tip of the iceberg".
