  • Rome escalator collapse Dozens of Russian CSKA Moscow fans injured one 'loses leg'

Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian fire and rescue service, said the incident at the Metro stop - near the main Termine train station - happened at 7.45pm local time (6.45pm BST), just over an hour before kick-off.

Italian media have reported that more than 20 people were injured when the escalator leading down to the metro station collapsed.

Reuters reported that some fans became trapped under the escalator's metal plates, and La Repubblica reported that one injury was so serious that it required the amputation of a foot.

Video footage posted on twitter shows the escalator picking up speed, forcing a pile up at the bottom of the stairway.

Most who were injured were reportedly fans of the visiting Russian soccer team CSKA Moscow, who were in town for an evening Champions League match against Rome's team. One Russian fan was stabbed with a knife, and two others were hurt in clashes with other supporters. "The club will do everything it can to provide the right support and assistance to those in need".

The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the incident.

Sky-TG24 television quoted police sources as saying that at least 20 people had been injured, mostly Russians, and that one was in serious condition.
