  • PSN Name changes coming to PS4

Multiple developers reportedly say they've been getting ready for Sony to introduce the ability to change your username on PlayStation Network.

Kotaku spoke recently with three different people at three development studios in the industry who work on multiplayer games.

It's 2018 and we still can't change our PSN usernames. The documentation was a guide for changing one's name on the PlayStation Network, that person said.

If you're wondering why it's necessary for studios to spend so much time altering their games in order to accommodate what seems to be a simple feature. well, that's because changing your PSN username is apparently not quite as simple as it seems to be. If individual developers are required to first tweak settings on their end associated with multiplayer games, this could be a long process to fix all current and older titles that have released over the years.

This is a very basic feature that PS4 and PlayStation fans generally have been requesting for ages, but after several major firmware updates (and the launch of a new console), we're still stuck with our original PSN names.

For context, Microsoft has allowed Xbox Live users to change their usernames for years. Sony has hinted at implementing such a feature in the past, but many users are baffled as to why they haven't been able to perform this seemingly simple function for the last 12 years.

Schreier's sources also shared that because your username was a key part of your PSN ID, the challenge is to make it so that you can change your username at will, with something else taking the key role of identifier for your account.
