PlayStation PSN Name Changes Coming Soon

10 October, 2018, 18:43 | Author: Rafael Roberts
  • PlayStation announce when you'll be able to change your PSN ID

Subsequent name changes will cost money, with it being $4.99 for PlayStation Plus members and $9.99 for everyone else.

Here's the kicker, because with Sony there usually is one: the name change won't actually work for every game.

The PSN Online ID Change feature beta will initially become available in the PlayStation Preview Program, which includes select users that have participated in system software betas in the past.

You will have the option to display your old ID alongside your new ID, which is interesting as it suggests that PlayStation really are putting some kind of universal identifier behind the scenes to keep your various names linked. Now, you won't be able to change your name quite yet, but rest assured that it's coming. The Nintendo Switch doesn't let you change your base Nintendo Account username, but it does make it easy (and free) to change the "nickname" that appears to other players online.

When you change your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID, so your friends can recognize you. If this is an issue, you can revert back to the original name for free at any time (but just once during the preview program).

This feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018, and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games that were released before this date. At that time, a full list of compatible games (those published before April 1, 2018) will be released. During the preview program you can revert back if the errors are so busted that you can't use programs correctly.

If you are not one of the lucky test users, you will need to wait until 2019, when a full roll out is planned for the feature.
