Saints quarterback Drew Brees became the NFL's all-time passing yards leader on Monday night after a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Quan Smith late in the second quarter against the Redskins.

The 39-year-old Brees passed Peyton Manning who held the record at 71,940 yards and Brett Favre who was in second place with 71,838 yards. As the Superdome crowd gave Brees a standing ovation, he removed his helmet and hugged his wife Brittany and their four children.

Brees had 12,238 passing yards as a member of the then-San Diego Chargers from 2001-05, but his assault on the National Football League record books truly began when he joined the Saints as a free agent in 2006.

It was one of three passing TDs on the night for Brees, moving him up to 499 for his career, one shy of joining Manning (539), Favre (508) and Tom Brady (500) as only the fourth man in the elite 500 club. How about that? Hey, I love you guys so much.

"I don't have time to keep doing these videos for you".

Saints officials said Brees also would hand his uniform over to the Hall of Fame after the game.

Anticipating that Brees might break the record against his team, Redskins Coach Jay Gruden told the Athletic's Tarik El-Bashir before the game, "It's a great accomplishment, man".

The game continued after with the Saints unsuccessfully attempted a two-point conversion - with Brees notably split out as a receiver, at least in theory, while backup quarterback Taysom Hill took the snap and tried to run into the end zone.

The Saints took a chance on Brees in 2006, and the payoff has been extraordinary.

Brees also was the final Saints player to run onto the field during pre-game introductions as fans belted out elongated howls of "Dreeeeeeew".
