Manchester City now sits second in the Premier League standings with 19 points, but third-place Liverpool has earned just as many points and only trails its rival by a six-goal differential. Guardiola deployed the pace and height of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte at centre-back: last season, the less mobile and imposing Nicolas Otamendi played in both away games and was swamped by Liverpool's front three.

"We played City now very often and they are just outstanding". We had our chances in the last minutes to win the game but we miss it.

There is a theory that although Klopp is able to defeat Guardiola in a one-off game, the latter will ultimately prevail over the course of a league campaign because of the control his football exerts and the squad he has. "How we played was different to previous seasons".

"They are incredibly quick and we controlled them".

"Our back four was so good and we enjoyed a lot of patient build up, but we didn't create much after that".

"It is a point".

"It's better than last season when we lost here". "We had our chance".

Silva's pass sent Mahrez, preferred to Sane, running through the middle but his angled shot rolled past the far post while a frustrated Aguero, who has never scored in his 10 games at Anfield, was replaced by Gabriel Jesus with 25 minutes remaining and retired to the bench with his hood pulled up.

"He had the courage to take the penalty, in training he shoots ideal penalties, but sometimes it happens", City manager Pep Guardiola said.

The visitors did have an opportunity to win it in the final stages, but Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty after Virgil van Dijk had been penalised for a challenge on Leroy Sane. And while Guardiola, diplomatically, name checked the division's other leading sides, he did concede that he expected Jurgen Klopp's team to be prime contenders in this season.

He said: "It feels much easier to say it was a penalty when he didn't score but I saw it".

"I think it was just decided between the boys".

"But the crowd was in really unhappy with the Napoli performance at times".

We had a little setback on Wednesday for sure.

The much-hyped encounter between two of Europe's most entertaining sides failed to live up to the billing, but the Citizens will rue the gaffe by the former Leicester City star as their winless run on the red side of Merseyside continued.

"We can take a lot of positives from it and be proud of how we performed and look to take that into the next game after the worldwide break".

An worldwide break now beckons and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp bemoaned its timing - and the demands it is placing on players.

At the same time Klopp is even prepared to surrender possession or - at least - not keep the ball for as long as usual as his players then fight to win it back quickly.
