  • US Secretary of State Pompeo to meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the State Department in Washington, Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018.

Those were the words U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used to describe how he feels about his return to North Korea this weekend to continue denuclearization talks with the regime.

According to Fox News, Pompeo will meet with Kim Sunday as part of his week-long trip to Asia that includes official stops in Japan, South Korea, and China.

US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will accompany Pompeo to Pyongyang on Biegun's first visit to the country since assuming the post in August.

The invitation to return to Pyongyang to discuss North Korean denuclearization efforts was made during a meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho amid United Nations sessions last week.

Pompeo is set to visit Pyongyang on Sunday for nuclear negotiations, his first trip since an earlier one was cancelled by Trump over a lack of progress.

"It shows forward progress and momentum that the secretary is making his fourth trip back in less than a year", a State Department spokeswoman said.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump held a groundbreaking summit in Singapore in June, where they reached a vague agreement to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, but there has been little movement since.

"I'm optimistic that we'll come away from that with better understandings, deeper progress and a plan forward, not only for the summit between the two leaders, but for us to continue the efforts to build out a pathway for denuclearization".

Pompeo also brushed aside suggestions there's a difference of opinion between himself and President Trump, . over a timeline for North Korea to ditch its nuclear program.

Trump has nevertheless appeared keen on a second summit with Kim, even though recent North Korean statements have suggested the two sides are far from narrowing their differences.

North Korea might want to voluntarily dismantle the facilities at its own discretion and open them up for inspection by worldwide experts to verify that it has destroyed them, experts say, while the United States appears to be demanding an inventory of nuclear warheads and facilities first, followed by a broader range of inspections. The US has said sanctions will remain in place until the denuclearization process is complete.

North Korea has complained on a weekly basis about the continued USA and worldwide sanctions placed on the country, and on Thursday said the measures were a "source of mistrust". "I think if our leaders have relatively friendly relations, that that's a good thing", she said.
