"This year's Peace Laureate Denis Mukwege has repeatedly condemned impunity for mass rape and criticized the Congolese government and other countries for not doing enough to stop the use of sexual violence against women as a strategy and weapon of war", the Nobel Prize tweeted. She is a survivor of human trafficking and is also the goodwill ambassador of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime or UNODC.

The Nobel committee said Murad had shown uncommon courage in recounting her own sufferings.

"I was in the operating room so when they started to make noise around [it] I wasn't really thinking about what was going on, and suddenly some people came in and told me the news", he said.

Ms Murad did not just lose her mother in the genocide. For this objective he wears a slogan on his lab coat that says, "Stop Raping Our Greatest Resources, Power to the Women and Girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo". Murad, who was a captive of Isis, has become a spokeswoman for Yazidi women abused by the group.

The 450-bed Panzi hospital that Mukwege founded treats more than 3,500 women a year, though not all for sexual abuse, providing free consultations and performing reconstructive surgery on women who have suffered serious internal injuries.

It is still shocking to note that rape during conflicts was not considered a war crime until 2008.

"The first thing they did was force us to convert to Islam". Murad is a member of the Yazidi community, against whom the IS has been waging war and performing human rights atrocities of the most violent kind. He then made a decision to draw attention of the world to, what he called as "an unjust war that has used violence against women and rape as a strategy of war".

And she and the Yazidis have won a high-profile supporter - Lebanese-British lawyer and rights activist Amal Clooney, who also penned the foreword to Murad's book, "The Last Girl", published in 2017. "They served as a weapon in the fight against Yazidis and other religious minorities", the Nobel Prize tweeted.

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has gone to campaigners against rape in warfare, Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege.

In other Nobel prizes this year, the medicine prize went Monday to James Allison of the University of Texas and Tasuku Honjo of Kyoto University, whose discoveries helped cancer doctors fight many advanced-stage tumors and save an "untold" numbers of lives.

The winners were named tonight by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Denis Mukengere Mukwege, a Congolese gynaecologist has been awarded the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. Jean-Claude Arnault was sentenced in Stockholm this week to two years in prison for rape.
