  • ‘Dracula’ Series from ‘Sherlock’ Team to Launch on BBC and Netflix

I wonder if this is a signal that the series will also transplant Dracula to modern times, like Sherlock did for Sherlock Holmes. The miniseries will be aired in three movie-sized, 90-minute installments, which makes it more like a trilogy of prestige TV movies. It will reintroduce the world's most famous vampire to audiences on BBC One in the United Kingdom, and Netflix everywhere else. Set in 1897, the series will revolve around the blood-drinking count from Transylvania who sets his sights on Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.

"There have always been stories about great evil", Moffat and Gatiss said. Still, we haven't seen a substantive reimagining of the Count since Frances Ford Coppola helmed Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama.

In their first major collaboration since Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are bringing a new, well-known literary figure to life on the small screen.

Want more stuff like this? Executive producers are Gatiss, Moffat and Vertue for Hartswood Films, Ben Irving for BBC and will be handled by Tanz for Netflix. "We are thrilled to be collaborating with them and the brilliant team at (producer) Hartswood on yet another iconic British series".

The series is a co-production of the BBC and Netflix, so hopefully, non-U.K. viewers won't have to wait too terribly long to check out the new series. With the success of countless film adaptations and book series based on Count Dracula and various incarnations of his vampire kin, it's safe to say there will be an audience ready and waiting for the Moffat-led project. BBC Studios Distribution brokered the deal with Netflix for Hartswood Films and will handle global distribution outside of Netflix territories.
